Group Calendar and Outfitter Author upset with new AddOn Policy

Outfitter and  Group Calendar Author no longer has mod’s publicly available

This is a sad day.  One of my favorite mods ever in the the game and almost an essential guild tool, Group Calendar, will no longer be publicly available.  Blizzard saw the need for an in game calendar, however theirs was so poorly done that we still need this addon.

Please support this author and his choices.  He is providing us a service that Blizzard is currently not offering in an effective manner.

I personally believe a donation request in game on their addons is perfectly acceptable, charging for an addon to use, I believe is not.  This seems to me very similar to the mod community for Half-Life.  This is a poor option of Blizzard to eliminate or frustrate a big portion of their community.  Many of these mods make a guild master and raid leaders life easier.

One big problem with this new model is WoWMatrix, with this application, users no longer have to go to the mods hosted location or the authors site to get updates.  This in turn eliminates and banner traffic or donation buttons that may pop up.  Which as you can tell directly effects the number of donations and visits to their sites.  WoWMatrix developers should work with all places they host their sites and add the ability to donate directly to the authors in the description field on the bottom of the app.

Anyway, it is a sad sad day in the WoW addon community.  If you are upset with this policy, please let Blizzard  know.  They have used other users mods, I am looking at you Fizzwidget, and incorperated them into the game in almost an exact same manner as the mod was written.  These are essential to make our life easier and those who do the work deserve the right to soliciate donations for their hard work.  Also, write to wowmatrix and use my suggestion, this will help out the community we need to help make our WoW expieriance a lot more enjoyable.

Guild experimentation

March 19th, 2009 Comments off

This coming Saturday night, at 5 PM CDT, we have out first joint guild run of NAXX-25.  I am unsure of how this will go or what we will be able to accomplish.  Our guild leader worked the deal out with this other guild.  I have a feeling things will go fine, however I am unsure as to the methods we will use and which guild will be the lead.  I am not really concerned.  I have the hope of the Arachnid quarter and the Plague quarter done.  It will mainly depend on how well we do on Safety Dance.

We tried this experiment once, it resulted in a guild merge that exploded weeks later when we had found success on a boss and our methods were disregaurded for the others.  Simple disagreement, but it lead to a big guild drama that resulted in a break up.

We are a guild are small, the same 7-8 raid every week for the 10 mans.  We hope to down Malygos on Friday night, we have had bad luck with disconnects and strategy in the past.  So this combination for the 25 man will be interesting.   I generally prefer to run larger raids like a democracy as long as people are pretty happy with the way the run is going.  Anyway, keep an eye out and I keep you up to date as how it went.

I am also working on a post about the effects of an e-sport client has on a game.  I have a great problem with the lengths Blizzard has been going to create this play balance in many classes and the route these PvP effects of these nerfs or buffs and the effect they have on raiding builds and their builds.  So keep an eye out for it.

4 nuts*, a hot tub, and a mic

March 11th, 2009 Comments off

*I am giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

For those who do not know, I am a big fan of the instance.  Scott and Randy progressively proceed to crack me up every week and make my work day go just a little bit quicker for the hour and a half or so that I get to listen. This week Randy happened to be up at Scott’s house and they did the broadcast live from the hot tub. For those who listen, this is the very same hot tub that can cause “reverse-hydrocution”.  Needless to say, the picture made me laugh.

There is lots of WoW talk, plenty of jokes, some bad humor and just all around fun.  They also have a mod of the week feature, which recommends some good ones.

AddOn: “Tour Guide” is awesome!

March 5th, 2009 Comments off

Okay for those that don’t know, I am not just a tank, I started out as a rogue a long time ago when I defected from my horde warrior to the alliance.  I am currently in the process of getting him up to 80.  I also have a DK, a pink haired gnome, I am working on since the Paladin may become a healer with the departure of one of our DK tanks.

Anyway on to the mod, this week is tour guide.  Since I leveled one character the old fashioned way I just want to go fast now.  A couple of fellow guildies, Anaheim, Dethkrusher, and Ullwin, recommended I give Tour Guide a shot, and I did.  Tour guide is simple and easy to use.  It is a power leveling tool.  It only works well when you are just starting a zone.  If you are in the middle of a zone and do not know where you started it is not as effective.  FYI, I started in Borean Tundra on the rogue, then went to Howling Fijord all without Tour Guide, so it was really hard to get a starting point.  However when I was ready to start Dragonblight, I loaded up that zone’s guide and have been following ever since.  It tries to give you the fastest optimum path to level your toon.  It tracks quests, hearthstone, and way points.  When used in conjunction with LightHeaded and TomTom you become an unstoppable leveling force.  In about 3 hours last night I was able to do approximately 60% of Dragonblight.  And almost 100% of a level (75->76).   One thing it seems to avoid is difficult group quests, which is nice.  It will also add to the top of a quest a “not in the guide” warning if it is not in the tracking scheme.  These then to be group quests or instances.  So you might want to pick these up as you go on, and track them yourself.  The mods tool tip tries to tell you where to go to complete the mission and or quickest path to get there.  For instance, it had me go to Fordragon Hold well before I needed to for a few reasons, first being it was the closest flight path and it will optimize getting back there later.  When a quest has a special item, it adds a quick hit button next to the tracker window, so you can just hit that to activate, use, or find the required device to finish the quest.

Basically, if you are on task and follow the guide closely, only straying on those group quests, you will find this an amazingly effective tool to help your power leveling.  If this is your first time through Northrend, I do not recommend it, enjoy the content, don’t just fly through it.  If this is your second, third, forth, etc time through, you may find this and incredibly effective tool.

Real quick, TomTom puts and arrow on the screen so you know what direction to go when tour guide gives you your next location.  It also puts pinpoints on the map for you, along with quest arrows tooltips on the mini-map.  If you are not running a coordinate mod, it has that too.

LightHeaded is a mod that parses all the help from WowHead into the mod for quests.  This adds an extra panel to you QuestTracker that will allow you to research information.  This helps when Tour Guide lacks information or you hit a snag killing somehing, ot finding something.

For The Alliance!

March 4th, 2009 Comments off

In a quest to get my Black Amani War Bear I worked with a guild/pug of the For The Alliance! achievement.  We managed to get through everything except Thunder Bluff.  The biggest problem was we got to Thunder Bluff and there were skeletons all over Cairne Bloodhoof.  We missed him in just a little bit.

We averaged 30-35 people and walkin killed and moved on.  The Horde had no idea what hit them.  We were a force.  It was a nice piece of honor points, so when I get around to spending some of them, it makes it a little easy.  I tanked a few of the heavy hitters down in the UC, so that was lots of fun.  Reminded me of the old 40 man raids, running like an army across the plains, daring to be stopped.

So anyway, if you are bored, put together a group and get your bear!

Grab your sword and fight the horde!

25 Man Naxx

February 27th, 2009 Comments off

As you can see by the achievements on the right, I received 3 new achievements last night. My first Emblem of Valor, Plague Wing, and Arachnid wing.

The run went really smooth, I was a trash tank due to my AoE capabilities.  I did have to emergency tank during the Grand Widow Faerlina when the main tank, a death knight, died right after the first enrage while the add was getting killed for the Widow’s Embrace.   I was on the ball, taunted, built up my threat and we were fine the rest of the fight.  I did pop my Divine Protection when the Widow enraged, just to be on the safe side.   All the other fights had me on some form of add duty.  I was please to have survived the Safety dance with Heigan twice.  We wiped the first attempt because we lost too many healers during the first full group pass.  The rest of the run was uneventful.

I did not get any main spec loot, luckily some guildies did.  Grats to Zek, Solo, and Dragon.  I did however get a healy chest piece which might come in handy when 3.1 drops with dual spec.  We hope to finish it off on Sunday.

This was a pug with the Shandris Raiders group, which is a group of folks who get together every week and hit up 25 mans.
